Yosushimania: Chef Yo's Traveling Sushi Bar

Yacht-to-villa omakase from St Barth's beloved Japanese caterer

Why Go

Once a low-key sushi counter tucked beside Villa Lodge 4 Épices in Grand Cul-de-Sac, Yosushimania has reinvented itself as the island's most sought-after mobile Japanese kitchen — Chef Yo now packs his knives and comes to you, whether 'you' means a suite in Colombier, a catamaran off Gouverneur, or a picnic blanket at Saline.

The Experience

There's no dining room to walk into anymore, and that's the whole point. Placing an order with Yosushimania feels less like takeout and more like commissioning a private meal: you tell the team where you'll be — a villa terrace, a beach cove, a boat at anchor — and a chilled bento of jewel-bright nigiri, maki, sashimi, tartares and tataki turns up beautifully plated. The style is classic Edomae with a Caribbean lightness: sushi rice seasoned just enough to hold together in the trade winds, tuna and salmon cut thick, wasabi served fresh rather than paste. For groups, Chef Yo will build a full spread of platters, or hop aboard for a private cooking class where guests roll their own maki alongside him. It's the kind of low-drama luxury St Barth does best — no reservations game, no dress code, just very good fish delivered exactly where the day happens to take you.

What to Try

Start with the sashimi assortment to gauge the day's catch, then move to the signature tuna tataki, seared rare and drizzled with a soy-citrus glaze. The salmon-avocado maki and spicy tuna rolls are crowd-pleasers for mixed groups, while the tartare bowls (tuna or salmon with sesame, ginger and scallion) travel especially well to the beach. If you're catering a bigger gathering, ask about the mixed platters and the tempura add-ons — and don't skip a bottle of cold sake or crisp rosé to go with it.

Insider Tip

Yosushimania isn't a walk-in — it's a phone-and-plan operation. Call or WhatsApp Chef Yo (+590 690 651 255) at least a day ahead, especially in high season, and give a delivery window rather than a hard time; boats move, and so does St Barth traffic. If you're staying on the Grand Cul-de-Sac side (Le Sereno, Rosewood, the Lodge villas), delivery is quickest and freshest — order lunch to eat on the lagoon-facing terrace rather than in town.

The Practical Stuff
