Return is just as painless: drop the keys, walk 30 seconds to check-in.
What to Try
Book an open-top Jimny or Mini Cabrio if you're staying more than two nights — the drive from Gustavia up to Colombier or over to Grand Cul-de-Sac is half the fun with the roof off. For couples on a short stay, the Fiat 500 or Smart is easier to squeeze into Gustavia's postage-stamp parking spots along the harbor.

Reserve well in advance for high season (mid-December through early January and February) — the island's entire rental fleet genuinely sells out, and walk-up rates during peak weeks can double. Ask specifically for a car with a full tank and photograph every panel before you drive off; the roads are narrow enough that door dings from passing scooters are common, and documenting the pickup condition saves any debate at return.
The Practical Stuff
Located inside the Aérogare at Aéroport Gustave III in Saint-Jean, a two-minute walk from arrivals. Counter hours generally track flight schedules (roughly 8am–5pm, closed Sunday afternoons). Bring your passport, driver's license, and the credit card used for booking — an international permit isn't required for stays under 90 days. Manual transmission is standard; request automatic at booking if needed. Drive on the right, speed limit is 45 km/h island-wide, and fuel up at the station in Lorient or Public before returning.
