Greek-Mediterranean beach club lunch on Shell Beach

Why Go

A barefoot afternoon of grilled octopus, chilled rosé, and Aegean-blue Caribbean views — Shellona is where St Barths trades cool for warm, sending Mykonos-style beach club energy to Gustavia's most cinematic stretch of sand.

The Experience

Perched right on Shell Beach just below Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf, Shellona is the island's daytime playground for Mediterranean flavors and sun-soaked lounging. Rattan chairs, white linens, and driftwood tones frame a wide-open view of the Caribbean, while Chef Yiannis Kioroglou — one of the brightest names in modern Greek cooking — sends out grilled seafood scented with herbs, citrus, and smoke. A resident DJ layers slow-building house tracks over clinking glasses, sunbeds fill by 1pm, and the whole place slides seamlessly from long lunch into late-afternoon cocktails as the sun tilts toward the water.

What to Try

Start with a spread of mezze — grilled calamari, moules saganaki in tomato and feta, and a half-dozen icy oysters. The signature Kalamakos (Greek-style skewers) are the crowd favorite, but the Mediterranean mahi-mahi and the whole grilled Caribbean lobster are what regulars come back for. Round it out with a Caesar-lobster salad, a bottle of Provençal rosé, and a scoop of the house Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts.

Insider Tip

Reserve a front-row sunbed (not just a table) at least 48 hours ahead — the beach loungers get folded into your bill as a lunch minimum and are the only way to stay past 3pm when the DJ set peaks. Ask for the row closest to the water on the Carl Gustaf side; you'll catch the breeze and the best sunset light without moving an inch.

The Practical Stuff

Shell Beach, Gustavia, 97133 St Barthélemy. Open daily 9:00am–8:00pm; lunch service runs roughly 12:30–4:00pm with cocktails and small bites either side. Reservations are essential in high season (mid-December through April) and strongly advised year-round. Walkable from downtown Gustavia in about 10 minutes; taxis and scooters can drop at the top of the beach path. Full bar, gluten-free and kosher options available, patio and beach seating, DJ or live music most afternoons. Smart-casual resortwear; swimwear fine on sunbeds, cover up at the table.
