The Experience
You'll find Le Diamant on the quieter, inland side of Saint-Jean, a few minutes' walk from the runway and the beach. The setting is airy and casual rather than polished — think open-air terrace, ceiling fans, easy conversation, and a soundtrack that stays out of the way. Service leans warm and unhurried; regulars get bises at the door, first-timers get gentle steering through the day's specials. Come at lunch for a working-island vibe with pilots, shopkeepers and villa managers plating up the €12 formule, or after 19:00 for a longer, wine-forward dinner when the pizzas start coming out of the oven and the pond behind the terrace goes indigo.
What to Try
Start with the accras — crisp cod fritters that arrive hot and disappear fast. From the mains, the grilled dorade (whole, off the bone tableside if you ask) is the honest measure of the kitchen; the magret de canard and filet mignon de porc are the go-tos for anyone in a red-wine mood. The wood-oven pizzas are a legitimate second act rather than an afterthought — order one to share even if you've committed to bistro classics. Finish with the café gourmand: a demitasse plus a rotating flight of homemade petits desserts that regulars quietly consider the best value on the island.
Insider Tip
The €12 plat du jour at lunch is one of St Barth's genuinely great deals, but it's rarely advertised — just ask for the 'formule midi' when you sit down. It sells out on days the fishing boats come in early, so aim for a 12:15 arrival rather than a 13:30 one, and request the pond-side table (not the one nearest the road) when you book.
