Why Go
On the wild eastern edge of St Barths, waves crash into a wall of volcanic rock and drain into a series of glassy, protected pools locals call the 'Washing Machine.' It's the closest thing the island has to a hidden treasure — no signs, no beach bar, no rules, just a short hike, a swim in nature's infinity pool, and the kind of raw Caribbean drama that Gustavia's polished harbor can't touch.
The Experience
Getting here is half the point. You'll leave the villa crowds behind and drive to Grand Fond, a quiet, windswept hamlet on the Atlantic coast where goats outnumber tourists. Park at the tiny four-car pull-off at the bend in the road, follow the dirt path along the barbed-wire fence down to the rocky beach, then turn right and pick your way over the coastal boulders for 15–25 minutes. The reward: two or three natural rock basins fed by ocean spray, sheltered from the open swell by a jagged lava dyke. On calm days the water is turquoise glass; on rougher days the surf explodes over the outer rocks and cascades into the pools behind you — hence the nickname. There's zero infrastructure, which is exactly why regulars love it.
What to Try
Bring a mask and snorkel — the deeper pool has surprisingly clear water and small reef fish darting between the crevices. Time your visit for mid-morning when the sun is high enough to light up the pools but the trade winds haven't fully picked up. Climb (carefully) onto the flat outer rocks to watch the Atlantic slam the coast, then retreat to the shallower back pool for a warm, still soak. Photographers should hike an extra five minutes past the pools for the cliff view back toward Toiny.
Insider Tip
Water shoes are non-negotiable — the approach is sharp volcanic rock and sea urchins hide in the pool ledges. Check the swell before you go: anything over 1.5m from the north or east turns the 'Washing Machine' from playful to genuinely dangerous, and locals will simply skip it that day. Also, never turn your back on the outer waves when standing on the rim rocks; that's how visitors get swept.
The Practical Stuff
Free, unstaffed, and open dawn to dusk. Located in Grand Fond on the east coast, about a 15-minute drive from Gustavia via Lorient and Toiny. Parking is limited to a handful of cars at the road bend above the beach; a 4WD or small rental car is easiest on the narrow lanes. Allow 2–3 hours round trip including the hike. Bring: water, reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes or sturdy sandals, and a dry bag — there's no shade, no bathroom, and no vendors anywhere near the trail.
