Le Papillon Ivre

A candlelit wine temple where 450 French bottles meet share-plate bistronomy

Why Go

Tucked into a quiet corner of Les Amandiers in St Jean, Le Papillon Ivre feels less like a restaurant and more like the private dining room of a very well-connected French friend. Julie Campion opened the doors in 2017 with a clear idea: build a proper Parisian-style neo-brasserie on a Caribbean hillside, then back it with one of the deepest wine cellars on the island. The result is warm, low-lit, low-key and completely at odds with the yacht-crowd polish of nearby Gustavia — which is exactly why regulars keep the address to themselves.

The Experience

The room is intimate — a handful of tables, exposed wood, soft light, and Julie herself moving between guests with bottles and suggestions. Two seatings run each night (7:00 PM and 8:30 PM), and the pace is unhurried; this is a place to linger over three or four small plates and let the wine pairings do the storytelling. Expect classic French bistronomy reimagined for sharing: fine charcuterie boards, aged cheeses, seasonal market dishes, and hearty mains that change with the chef's mood and what arrived off the boat that week. The cellar is the headline act, with more than 100 wines poured by the glass and bottles that climb from a friendly €40 to a jaw-dropping €21,000 — but the sweet spot is letting Julie steer you toward a small-producer Burgundy or Loire white you'd never have found alone.

What to Try

Start with the charcuterie and aged-cheese selection — it's the house calling card and pairs with almost anything Julie pulls from the cellar. Follow with whatever seasonal plat du jour the chef is running (the menu rotates constantly, so trust the recommendation). Ask for a wine flight rather than a single glass; with 100+ options open at any moment, it's the fastest way to understand what makes this list special. Save room for a final glass of something sweet and a shared dessert — the tapas-style format is built for grazing across the whole meal.

Insider Tip

Book at least 24 hours ahead — this is a small room and it fills fast, especially in high season. Take the 8:30 PM second seating if you want the slower, more conversational half of the evening, when Julie tends to spend more time table-hopping with recommendations. And don't just order from the by-the-glass list: tell her your budget and taste, and she'll open something special for the table that isn't on the printed menu.
