Le Nid d'Aigle

An eagle's-nest B&B where St. Barth wakes up slowly

Why Go

Perched on the hillside above Anse des Cayes, this intimate guesthouse trades resort polish for a private-villa feel — with a pool, panoramic Caribbean views, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget your phone exists.

The Experience

Le Nid d'Aigle (literally 'The Eagle's Nest') is a small, family-run guesthouse tucked into the green cliffs above Anse des Cayes, on the wilder, northwestern side of St. Barth. It's not a resort — it's a large hillside villa converted into a handful of airy, Caribbean-styled rooms and an independent studio, each with its own terrace framing the sea, the surf breaking on the reef below, and (on a clear morning) the outline of neighboring islands on the horizon. Days start with breakfast delivered to your terrace, drift through a swim in the small pool with nothing but sky above it, and end watching the sunset paint the bay pink. The mood is discreet, romantic, and unhurried — closer to staying with well-connected friends than checking into a hotel.

What to Try

Take breakfast on your private terrace at first light — the sunrise view over Anse des Cayes is the property's signature moment. Cool off in the hillside pool mid-morning before the sun gets fierce, then walk (or drive — it's steep) down to Anse des Cayes beach, a locals' favorite with reef-protected swimming and a surf break at the northern end. Use the in-room kitchenette to lay out a picnic of market cheeses and a bottle of rosé for a low-key evening on the terrace instead of eating out every night.

Insider Tip

Book the independent studio if it's available — it has the most privacy, its own entrance, and the best sightline down to the bay. And rent the smallest 4x4 you can find: the road up to the property is narrow, steep, and switch-backed, and full-size SUVs are miserable on it. Also, breakfast is included and generous — don't skip it to sleep in.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Anse des Cayes, on the north/northwest coast, roughly 10 minutes by car to Gustavia and 5 minutes to the airport. A rental car is essentially required — taxis are scarce and expensive, and the hillside setting isn't walkable to town. Free parking on-site, free WiFi, outdoor pool, and continental breakfast included. Rooms come with kitchenettes (fridge, microwave, cooking plate), useful for St. Barth's famously expensive dining scene. Payment and reservations are handled directly — call ahead in high season (Dec–April), when the property books out weeks in advance. Not ideal for families with small children given the hillside terrain and pool without lifeguard.

Pair It With

  • Anse des Cayes Beach — The nearest beach and a locals' favorite — reef-sheltered swimming, a surf break at the north end, and a 5-minute drive down the hill.
  • Abyss Restaurant Guide — An easy dinner option close to the guesthouse when you don't feel like driving into Gustavia.
  • 6e SENS Massage Wellness Beauty — Book an in-room or on-site massage to extend the retreat mood without leaving the neighborhood.
  • Absolute Hot Yoga (Gustavia) — A short drive into town for a morning class before beach-hopping — pairs well with the guesthouse's slow-morning rhythm.
  • À fleur de peau (Saint-Jean) — Stop in for beach-ready resort wear on the way back from the airport or Saint-Jean beach.
