The Experience
Set directly on Plage de Saint-Jean, this small (just 12 rooms and suites) boutique hotel skips the marble grandeur that dominates the island in favour of a laid-back, colour-splashed Caribbean bohemia. Rooms open onto private patios or a garden pool and come kitted with king beds, air-con, minibar, safe and the little iPod-dock/CD-player touches that give the place its early-2000s beach-house soul rather than a corporate polish. The action, though, happens outside your door: teak decks and daybeds spill onto the sand, palapa umbrellas shade the loungers, and a few strides puts your toes in some of the calmest turquoise water in St Barth. By day it's a pool-and-book kind of place with spa treatments on tap; by evening La Plage restaurant fires up — sandy floor, driftwood tables, rum bar — for a dinner that inevitably slides into a live band, a DJ, a fashion show or a full-blown fire performance. It's less resort, more house party you never want to leave.
What to Try
Book the Sunday-night Lolo De Luxe BBQ — it's the week's most-loved dinner on St Jean and non-guests fight for a table. From the kitchen, order the yellowfin tuna tataki with Thai sauce to start, the grilled local lobster if it's on, and the half-cooked wahoo with tandoori spices for a plate that captures the whole Franco-Creole point of the island. Grab a rum flight at the beach bar before dinner, then stay for the weekly wine tasting or whichever live act is on that night.
Insider Tip
The hotel is tiny and the beachfront rooms go first — ask specifically for one of the sea-view suites with a direct-to-sand patio rather than a pool-view garden room, and book Sunday night on property so you can roll from the BBQ straight into bed without a taxi hunt. If you're not staying, arrive at La Plage by 7pm on a party night: after 9 the sandy dining room fills and the bar becomes standing-room only.
