L'Isola

The Italian that quietly runs Gustavia's dinner scene

Why Go

On an island where French bistros and beach clubs get all the attention, L'Isola has been the yacht crowd's go-to for a proper plate of hand-cut pasta since 2008 — no gimmicks, just Italian ingredients flown in and cooked the way Fabrizio Bianconi (of Via Veneto in Santa Monica) wants them cooked.

The Experience

Tucked on Rue du Roi Oscar II a block up from the Gustavia harbor, L'Isola trades the barefoot-Caribbean look for something closer to a Milanese trattoria: white linens, warm lighting, an Italian-heavy wine list stacked behind the bar, and a dining room where the volume rises the moment the boats empty out around 9pm. The staff are almost entirely Italian, they remember faces, and they'll steer you honestly if you ask what came in fresh that day. It's polished without feeling stiff — the kind of place regulars book two nights in a row.

What to Try

Start with the burrata and prosciutto or the fritto misto to see what the kitchen does with what came off the boats. The homemade taglioni and the ravioli are the reason most people are here — the pasta room turns them out daily, so order one of each and share. For a main, the branzino selvatico al forno (whole wild sea bass, deboned tableside) is the signature and worth the splurge; otherwise the fettuccine bolognese is the sleeper hit. Ask the sommelier for something from the Italian side of the list — the French wines are safe, the Italian selections are where it gets interesting.

Insider Tip

Book before you land. In high season (mid-December through New Year's, then again in February) L'Isola is genuinely full every night and walk-ins get turned away by 8pm. Email reservations@lisolastbarth.com rather than calling — you'll get a faster confirmation, and if you mention a preferred table (the banquettes along the wall are quieter than the center) they'll usually accommodate. If L'Isola is booked, their sister spot L'Isoletta around the corner does the same pasta at pizzeria prices with no reservation needed.

The Practical Stuff

Address: Rue du Roi Oscar II, Gustavia 97133. Phone: +590 590 51 00 05. Dinner only, typically from 7pm; closed during the September–October low season. Expect €80–140 per person before wine — this is St Barths, and the pasta is priced accordingly. Smart-casual dress: linen shirts and dresses fit right in, but nobody's turning away a nice tee. Parking in Gustavia is street-only and tight after 7:30pm; taxi or walk from the harbor.

Pair It With

  • Le Select Guide — The iconic open-air Gustavia bar two minutes away — grab a pre-dinner rum punch here to shake off the polish before your reservation.
  • Shell Beach Guide — A five-minute walk down the hill from L'Isola; go for sunset drinks at Shellona beforehand, then walk back up for dinner.
  • Absolute Hot Yoga Guide — Same Gustavia neighborhood — book a morning class to earn the pasta portions you're about to order that night.
