The Experience
Flamand Beach Hotel feels less like a resort and more like a friend's beach house on the calmer, wilder north-west coast of St Barth. The handful of suites open almost directly onto the sand, each with its own kitchenette so you can stock up at the Saint-Jean marché and settle in for a longer stay. Days drift between the small pool, a lounger on Flamands' 800-metre arc of powder, and short walks to the fishermen's end of the bay where pelicans dive at dusk. It's intimate, unfussy, and refreshingly low-key for an island better known for superyachts — the sort of address returning guests guard closely.
What to Try
Book a suite facing the ocean rather than the garden — the sound of the surf here is the whole point. Order the fresh lobster at neighbouring La Langouste (a Flamands institution), take the 20-minute coastal footpath from the northern end of the beach over to secluded Anse de Colombier for a snorkel, and time at least one aperitif at Case de l'Isle at Cheval Blanc next door for a taste of grand-hotel polish without leaving the bay.

Flamands faces open Atlantic swell, so the surf can pick up fast in winter — ask the front desk which end of the beach is calmest that morning. And request a suite on the upper level: the extra elevation gives you an unbroken sightline over the bay to the sunset, plus more privacy from the beach path below.

Address: Baie de Flamands, 97133, St Barthélemy. About a 10-minute drive (roughly 3 km) from Gustaf III Airport and Gustavia; taxis are the easiest transfer as there's no Uber on-island. Seven suites, all with kitchenettes, air-con, free Wi-Fi, breakfast, pool and free parking. High season runs mid-December to mid-April with a two-week minimum around Christmas/New Year; shoulder season (May, June, November) offers the best value. Closed traditionally during the September hurricane window — confirm dates directly.
