Carla Saint Barth: Gustavia's Cult-Favorite Shoe Salon
An unmissable stop for footwear lovers, hidden in the Carré d'Or's discreet upper level.
Why Go
Behind an unassuming Gustavia storefront waits one of the Caribbean's most quietly obsessive shoe collections — a boutique named after the owner's mother, Carla, and stocked with the kinds of heels, flats and sandals fashion editors actually chase down.
The Experience
Tucked into Les Hauts du Carré d'Or just above Gustavia's harbor, Carla Saint Barth trades the frantic energy of a designer megastore for something more like a walk-in closet run by someone with excellent taste. The space is small, calm and beautifully edited, with soft lighting bouncing off rows of Italian leather. Staff greet you the St Barth way — warmly, unhurried, and happy to let you browse. Because the shop keeps island hours (long midday siesta, then a second wind before dinner), a visit tends to slot naturally between a Shell Beach swim and an aperitif on the port. Expect to leave with something you didn't plan on, and a shoebox you'll pack very carefully.
What to Try
Come for the shoes first: heels by Amina Muaddi, Aquazzura, Gianvito Rossi, Francesco Russo and Piferi, plus artisanal styles handmade in Italy's Fiesso d'Artico shoemaking district. The accessories wall is worth the detour too — Bottega Veneta's Intrecciato handbags, Celine leather goods, Borsalino straw hats, and jewel-toned Claudio Merazzi pieces you won't spot back home. Ask about limited-edition and one-off pairs kept behind the counter; several designers drop capsules here that never appear in their mainland flagships.
Insider Tip
Time your visit for the morning slot (10am–1pm) or right when the shop reopens at 3:30pm — that's when the newest arrivals are still on the floor and staff have time to pull sizes from the back. Sunday is dark, and cruise-ship afternoons can thin the best sizes fast, so if a specific designer is on your list, message ahead on +590 590 27 64 03 and they'll set pieces aside.
The Practical Stuff
Location: Les Hauts du Carré d'Or, Gustavia 97133, St Barthélemy — a short walk uphill from the harbor. Hours: Monday–Saturday 10am–1pm and 3:30pm–7:30pm; closed Sundays and reduced hours in the September low season. Phone: +590 590 27 64 03. Payment: major credit cards accepted; prices are in euros. No dedicated parking — leave the Mini on the port and stroll up. Purchases are duty-free, which softens the sticker on that pair of Gianvito Rossis considerably.
