Why Go
Follow the salt-pond road until the pavement runs out, scramble over the low dune, and the whole world drops away — no music, no umbrellas for rent, no hotels on the horizon. Just a wide arc of pale-pink sand, turquoise surf, and the low hush of trade winds. Locals will tell you Saline is the last piece of 'old' St Barth, the beach that survived precisely because nobody was allowed to build on it.
The Experience
Saline sits on St Barth's untamed southern coast, a short drive from Gustavia through the goat-cropped hills of Grand Fond. You park in a dusty lot beside the abandoned salt marshes (those pink and gold shimmers behind the beach are natural brine), then walk about five minutes over a low, sandy hill. The reveal at the crest is the whole point: a half-mile of soft, fine sand fringed by sea-grape trees, framed by two rocky headlands, with nothing man-made in sight. The water is clearer and cooler than the calmer north-shore beaches, and because the bay opens to the Atlantic swell, conditions swing from glassy-calm mornings to bouncy bodysurf afternoons. This is where French regulars come to disappear for a whole day with a baguette, a bottle of rosé, and a paperback — and where you'll see Parisians reading Le Monde three feet from off-duty crew from the megayachts anchored off Gustavia.
What to Try
Come early (before 10:30 a.m.) or late (after 3 p.m.) for the softest light and the emptiest sand — the middle of the day is when the yacht tenders roll in. Walk the full length of the beach at least once: the left (eastern) end has the biggest shore break and the clothing-optional stretch, the center is family territory, and the right end tucks into a rocky cove that's great for a swim when the surf is up. On a calm day, bring a mask and fins and drift along the rocks at either headland — you'll see parrotfish, needlefish, and the occasional sea turtle. When the swell is running (typically December through March), Saline is the island's best beach for a clean, punchy bodysurf. Afterward, cut back through the salt pond trail at golden hour: the reflections off the flats are startlingly pink.

There is genuinely nothing on the beach — no vendor, no shade rental, no water. Stop at the tiny grocer in Saint-Jean or a boulangerie in Lorient on the way and build a picnic (jambon-beurre, a wedge of Comté, cold rosé, a big bottle of water). Bring your own umbrella or a pareo you can stake into the sand; the dunes offer zero shade and the sun is punishing by 11 a.m. And pay attention to the surf: the shore break looks playful but there's a strong shorepound that has broken more than one collarbone — enter through the flatter middle of the bay, not off the steep sand ledge at the ends.
The Practical Stuff
Location: Anse de Grande Saline, south coast of St Barthélemy, roughly a 15-minute drive from Gustavia via Lurin and Grand Fond. Access: free parking in a small dirt lot at the end of Route de Saline, then a 5-minute walk over a sandy rise (not wheelchair-friendly, and flip-flops are easier than sandals in the loose sand). Hours: unstaffed and open 24/7; safest and most pleasant between roughly 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Cost: free. Facilities: none — no toilets, no showers, no loungers, no food or drink for sale. Cell service is spotty. The far eastern end is traditionally clothing-optional; nudity is discouraged elsewhere on the beach. Bring cash for the handful of restaurants back up the road if you want lunch after.
