When you're standing in Marigot with shopping bags or landing at little L'Espérance Airport in Grand Case, these are the two official taxi stations that get you moving on the French side without the app-hailing scramble.
The Experience
Unlike ride-hail services (which don't really operate in St. Martin), the French side runs on a network of licensed taxi stations with fixed dispatchers. The Marigot rank sits near the waterfront and open-air market, so it's the natural pickup point after browsing the stalls, grabbing lunch at a lolo, or catching the ferry back from Anguilla. The Grand Case station is tied to L'Espérance Airport (the small regional strip, not Princess Juliana on the Dutch side) and doubles as the go-to rank for anyone heading into Grand Case village for a sunset dinner. Dispatchers speak French and English, and cars are the standard unmetered island taxis: fares are set by government tariff based on zone, number of passengers, and time of day, not by the meter. Agents staff both stations 07:00–19:00 Monday through Friday, so plan phone bookings inside those hours; outside them, drivers still work but you'll be flagging or calling individual operators directly.
What to Try
For first-timers, use the Marigot station as a launchpad for a half-day loop: Marigot Market in the morning, then a run out to Grand Case for lunch on Boulevard de Grand-Case, and back via Friar's Bay or Baie Rouge. Ask the dispatcher for a driver willing to wait or return at a set time — it's cheaper and less stressful than trying to catch a random taxi at a remote beach. From the Grand Case station, the classic use case is a one-way to Princess Juliana Airport on the Dutch side for departure day, or a shuttle over to the Anguilla ferry dock at Marigot.

Always confirm the fare before you get in, and confirm the currency — French-side drivers will quote in euros by default, but almost all accept USD at a rounded exchange. Fares jump roughly 25–50% after 21:00 and on Sundays/holidays, so if you're planning a late dinner in Grand Case, book the return ride when you're dropped off rather than trying to find one at midnight. For groups of three or more, the per-person supplement is small; splitting a taxi almost always beats renting a car if you're only doing one or two outings.

Cash is king — USD and EUR both accepted, but small bills are strongly preferred; card acceptance is inconsistent. Fares are zone-based and fixed by the Collectivité; ask to see the printed tariff sheet if you want to double-check. Note that French-side taxis can drop you anywhere on the island but generally won't pick up on the Dutch side, where Dutch-plated taxis have the rank — plan your return accordingly.
