Grand Case-Espérance Airport (SFG)

The pocket-sized French-side runway that quietly hops you to St. Barts, Anguilla, and beyond

Why Go

Everyone knows Princess Juliana on the Dutch side for the jaw-dropping Maho Beach approaches, but savvy island-hoppers use this sleepy little strip on the French side instead — one small terminal, one short runway tucked between the hills of Grand Case, and turboprops that get you to the next island before an SXM taxi line even moves.

The Experience

L'Espérance feels less like an airport and more like a bus stop with wings. You pull up to a modest single-story terminal on the outskirts of Grand Case village, walk about thirty seconds from curb to check-in desk, and share the waiting area with a mix of St. Barts weekenders in linen, Anguilla day-trippers with beach bags, and locals heading home to Guadeloupe. There's no jet bridge, no duty-free maze, no Maho-style spectacle — just a walk across the tarmac to a Twin Otter or a small ATR, wave to the ground crew, and you're airborne over the lagoon in minutes. The runway is famously short (about 1,200 meters), so departures are punchy and the views on climb-out over Grand Case Bay and Anguilla in the distance are absurd for the price of the ticket.

What to Try

Book an inter-island hop on Winair or Air Antilles rather than the ferry-plus-taxi shuffle from SXM — flights to St. Barthélemy (SBH) clock in under 15 minutes and land on the equally legendary Gustaf III strip; Anguilla, Guadeloupe (Pointe-à-Pitre), and seasonal Dominica routes also run out of here. Grab an early morning departure so you land on the next island in time for lunch, and ask for a window seat on the left side heading to St. Barts for the best reef-and-cay views.

Insider Tip

If you're staying anywhere on the French side — Grand Case, Orient Bay, Terres Basses, Marigot — do not automatically default to SXM for regional flights. SFG cuts your transfer time in half, parking is free and uncomplicated, and check-in typically opens 60–90 minutes before departure with almost no queue. Bring your passport even for intra-French routes (Guadeloupe counts as France, but airline staff still ask), pay landing/departure fees in either euros or dollars, and keep carry-ons truly carry-on-sized because the aircraft holds are tiny. One more thing: there's no real food or shopping airside, so grab a coffee and a pain au chocolat at a Grand Case bakery on the way in.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Route de l'Espérance, Grand Case, French side of St. Martin, roughly 10 minutes by car from Grand Case village center and about 25–35 minutes from Philipsburg or Simpson Bay depending on traffic through the causeway. IATA code SFG, ICAO TFFG. Terminal hours track the flight schedule (roughly 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily); no 24-hour operations and no night landings. Currency: EUR and USD both accepted at counters. Taxis are available but not always waiting — pre-book if you're arriving on the last flight of the day. Rental car desks are limited; most visitors arrange a car through their hotel or pick up at SXM instead. No lounges, minimal seating, one small snack counter that keeps irregular hours.

Pair It With

  • Grand Case village lolos and bistros — The airport sits minutes from the island's culinary capital — build in a long lunch on Boulevard de Grand Case before or after your flight, from grilled ribs at the beachfront lolos to Michelin-tier French bistros just up the street.
  • Orient Bay Guide — A 15-minute drive from SFG, making it an easy last-morning beach stop before a midday hop to St. Barts or Anguilla.
  • Marigot Market Guide — Pair a morning stroll through the French-side capital's open-air market with an afternoon inter-island flight — both are on the same side of the island and skip the Dutch-side traffic entirely.
  • Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) — Use SXM for your long-haul arrival and SFG for onward regional hops; combining the two often beats the price and hassle of connecting through San Juan or Antigua.
