St. Maarten/St. Martin rewards drivers: two countries, thirty-plus beaches, and a coastline you can lap in a day — but only if you're not waiting on a taxi. Alamo's counter sits inside the SXM arrivals hall, so you can be on the road to Maho, Grand Case, or Simpson Bay before your suitcase wheels have cooled.
The Experience
Alamo shares Counter #8 with Enterprise and National in the Princess Juliana arrivals hall — walk out of customs, hang a left past the taxi dispatchers, and you'll spot the shared kiosk. An agent checks your paperwork there and then a short branded shuttle whisks you a couple of minutes to the main lot behind the airport perimeter, where the cars are staged. The fleet leans practical: compact Kias, Nissan Versas and Sentras, a handful of small SUVs (RAV4, Kicks) and the occasional Jeep Wrangler for people planning to bump down to Happy Bay or the Terres Basses back roads. Everything is left-hand drive on right-hand roads, which is a relief for North American visitors and only mildly disorienting for Europeans. Return is drop-and-go: leave the car in the marked Alamo row, drop the keys, and shuttle back to departures.
What to Try
For a couple hopping between Maho and Orient Bay, the economy compact is plenty — parking in Philipsburg and Marigot is tight and a big SUV becomes a liability. Families or groups heading to villa rentals in Terres Basses or Oyster Pond should size up to an intermediate SUV for the luggage room and higher clearance on the pot-holed cross-island roads. Ask specifically about the unlimited-mileage rate (standard here but worth confirming) and add the second driver at the counter — it's often waived or heavily discounted for spouses. Skip the pre-paid fuel option unless you're on a dawn flight out; the Shell and Sol stations near the airport roundabout are cheap and easy.

Decline the on-airport GPS add-on and just use Google Maps offline — but download BOTH the 'Sint Maarten' and 'Saint-Martin' tiles before you land, because the border isn't marked and search behavior changes depending on which side of the island you're on. Also: your Alamo contract covers both the Dutch and French sides (no separate insurance needed to cross), but tell the agent explicitly that you plan to drive to Grand Case or Marigot so it's noted on the file — it saves a phone call if you're ever pulled over at a gendarmerie checkpoint.
